The Edgemoor Club

In 1920, Walter Tuckerman a Harvard College graduate and sportsman built two tennis courts in the Edgemoor neighborhood of then-rural Bethesda, Maryland, eleven miles from the center of Washington, DC; one day he invited the neighborhood to come out and play, thus began the long history of The Edgemoor Club. From its modest beginnings, Edgemoor would become the center of tennis for the DC area, and home to some of the finest players in the country. The Edgemoor Club has been many things in its first 100 years: social center, swim club, a green oasis in a busy world, but it has been mostly a tennis club for the modern practice of an ancient sport, a magnet for top-level players and people who love the game, a sanctuary for kids who want to swing a racquet. From its glorious past to its vibrant present, Edgemoor boasts some of the most influential people in our sport: Pauline Betz Addie, a former World Number 1 amateur player, winner of Wimbledon, and four-time U.S. National Champion who was inducted to the International Tennis Hall of Fame; Donald Dell, co-founder of the ATP and Captain of the U.S. Davis Cup teams of 1968 and 1969, both undefeated, he played on the 1961 and 1963 United States Davis Cup teams; Richey Reneberg, two times Grand Slam Doubles Champion (U.S. Open and Australian Open), ranked #1 ATP doubles and #20 ATP singles; Mark Ein, current owner of the ATP 500 Citi Open professional tennis tournament in Washington, DC and founder of the Washington Kastles World Team Tennis team. The spirit of Edgemoor is perhaps best expressed by Richey Reneberg and Donald Dell:

“It’s about the intangibles—the club culture, the great tennis history, the eclectic membership. Tennis can often be transactional, but here it’s people just hanging out, having great conversations about tennis or anything else.” — Richey Reneberg

“My memories of Edgemoor…were the happiest and most meaningful times of my life as a player.” — Donald Dell
