On the 10th of August 1966, the Real Club de Tenis de San Sebastián was the venue for one of the most spectacular and original parties to be held in the city of Donostia in living memory. In an exotic atmosphere, this charity party, called the Indian Cha, aimed to raise money for the missions in India.
The event had a unique atmosphere that transported the participants to distant lands. Among the details that made the evening special were the elephants, generously donated by Circus Atlas. Mister and Mistress Smith, renowned trainers, wanted to do their bit for this charitable cause and made several pachyderms available to the Club, which became the centre of attention for the day.
It was the youngest children who were most delighted to meet a young elephant that looked like something out of a fairy tale. As the press reported at the time, the cute animal was reminiscent of the beloved Disney character Dumbo and caused a sensation among children and adults alike.
As well as fulfilling its charitable purpose, the event left an indelible mark on the memories of all who attended. The following day, the local press described it as an act of ‘great brilliance and originality’, which consolidated the club as a reference point for activities beyond sport.
We remember this day with pride as a sign of the spirit of solidarity and social commitment that has always been part of our essence.
