Club Nacional de Guayaquil has won the second edition of the Centenary Cup, which was hosted by Gayaquil Tenis Club from 16-19 May, with participation of 129 players representing 14 Ecuadorian clubs.
On the final day of the 45 & Over competition, Club Nacional beat the team from Portoviejo Tenis Club after winning the singles and doubles matches. With the result, the Club drew level with the host Guayaquil Tenis Club’s ‘A’ team’s 17 points, but claimed the title thanks to a higher number of sets won.
In the 55 & Over competition, Guayaquil Tennis Club’s ‘A’ team beat Indoamerica Tennis Club 3-0 to claim the title in that age group.
Speaking at the prize-giving ceremony where he awarded the champions a replica of the ‘Centenary Cup’ donated by the CTC, Ecuadorian Tennis Federation President Danilo Carrera Drouet said, “It has been a day of good sportsmanship and exciting matches; we hope that next year even more clubs will join, making this our most important inter-club event.”
Three days of intense tennis competition were punctuated by social events, such as the welcome cocktail hosted by the Guayaquil Tennis Club, and were characterised by camaraderie on and off court. An opening ceremony saw the participating teams presented while parading with the flags of their clubs.
The clubs taking part in this second edition of the competition were Albotenis, Ambato Tenis Club, Bahía Tenis Club, Club Nacional, Club Tungurahua, Guayaquil Country Club, Guayaquil Tenis Club, Indoamerica Tenis Club, Milagro Tenis Club, Quito Tenis & Golf Club, Salinas Golf & Tenis Club, Sociedad Tungurahuense, Umiña Tenis Club and Portoviejo Tenis Club.
