Last weekend, 7th and 8th October, the II Clubs Tennis Weekend by CTC was held, an initiative promoted by the Centenary Tennis Clubs in which sport and solidarity go hand in hand. In this second edition, the proceeds will go to the Vall d’Hebron Hospital’s ALS (Amyotrophic Lateral Sclerosis) Research Institute.
Members of RCT Barcelona-1899 enjoyed two matinees of tennis. On Saturday, they were able to polish their strokes thanks to the guidance of the coaches from the Club’s Tennis School, while on Sunday, the competition and competitiveness of the participants came to the fore. And there was excitement until the very last moment to find out the winning team. Four teams, named after tennis legends such as Bjorn Borg, Mats Wilander, Chris Evert and Martina Navratilova, fought for the victory, which went to the team named after the American champion of Czech origin… by games won!
The battle with the Bjorn Borg team was fierce until the end. But it was José Olivier, Berta Esteba, Oriol Vallès, Maydes Abad, Elena Orta and Monica Marbà who celebrated the final triumph… Although the most important thing was the cause for which they all participated in this II Clubs Tennis Weekend by CTC: to raise funds for research into ALS, a disease of the neurons in the brain, brain stem and spinal cord that control the movement of voluntary muscles and which, to date, still has no cure.
Dr. Raúl Juntas and Kiku Costa, former manager of CT Sant Cugat who was diagnosed with ALS, thanked RCT Barcelona-1899 for the Club’s solidarity, «a value that should be included in the statutes of all tennis clubs», said Costa, a patient of Dr. Juntas, who has been conducting trials on ALS for 20 years and who hopes one day «to be able to cure patients suffering from this disease». Every day, three new patients are diagnosed in Spain.
From the RCTB-1899, as highlighted by the president, Jordi Cambra, «we want to make our members happier and healthier, but also that our society improves every day and for this it is necessary to be supportive, as are also other centenary clubs around the world that join this initiative during the month of October».
The weekend ended with an aperitif in the Chill Out for all participants and special thanks to Coca-Cola, who supplied energy drinks to all those who attended the II Clubs Tennis Weekend for CTC.
