Virtus Tennis Bologna, the history of tennis in the heart of Bologna

The Club Virtus Tennis Bologna is one of the most important in Italy, thanks to the quality of its services and its century-long history full of successes, prestigious events and international personalities.

Founded in 1925 as the Tennis Section of the Società di Educazione Fisica Virtus (SEF Virtus), the Club quickly established itself in the city and on the national tennis scene. Over the decades, it has hosted high-profile tournaments (including the Absolute Italian Championships, the Brian Cup and the Davis Cup), seeing important names in international tennis such as Nicola Pietrangeli, Adriano Panatta, Corrado Barazzutti, Fausto Gardini, Sergio Tacchini, Paolo Canè, Tathiana Garbin, Stefano Galvani, Simone Bolelli and Lorenzo Musetti compete on its clay court.

At the same time, thanks to Virtus Tennis’s goal of building and training young tennis hopefuls: champions such as Vanni Canapele, Orlando Sirola, Beppe Merlo, Nicla Migliori, Maria Teresa Riedl, Ferruccio Bonetti, Paolo Bertolucci, Gianluca Rinaldini, Marco Consolini, Stefania Cicognani, Omar Camporese, and Raffaella Reggi have grown and improved on its courts.

As a club, Virtus Tennis has collected prestigious successes in important trophies such as the Brian Cup, the Bonacossa Cup and the Bossi Cup.

Renato Del Mugnaio, president of Virtus Tennis 1925 A.S.D., tells about the Club: «Virtus Tennis is a historic and prestigious place not only for tennis in Bologna and Italy, but also beyond the borders of our country. Over the decades our Club has hosted high caliber competitions on its courts, seeing great champions of our sport compete on its clay and raising young talents who played stably at the top of world tennis. Today Virtus Tennis is going through a great period of splendor: the number of registered members of our Club has reached a total of 900 people in this 2025, while another 300 are on the waiting list. This is because in recent years we have decided to limit Virtus Tennis membership to a closed number of members, with the main purpose of ensuring the best experience and services to those who decide to affiliate with us. During this year we will also celebrate our first Centennial and we will do so with a series of exciting activities open to our members, institutions and the public and focused on celebrating what Virtus Tennis has been, is and will be in the world of tennis.
For all of us it is a privilege to have entered this 2025 in the prestigious Centenary Tennis Clubs, which through its daily activities enhances the dialogue and common growth of the Clubs that have made tennis history around the world».
