Sustainability, a challenge for clubs

The last online session prepared by CTC touched on a very topical subject: sustainability. Pablo Acevedo, Director of Operations at Real Club de Tenis Barcelona-1899, presented the plan that the club has implemented over the last four years.

About a dozen people listened intently to what Acevedo had to say. His presentation included the club’s vision, which is nothing less than to promote sustainable development in all their activities by measuring and minimizing environmental impacts through strategies and targeted actions.

With the club hosting one of the most important tournaments in the annual calendar, Acevedo stressed the need to set real and achievable goals after assessing the environmental impact. Among the most important he mentioned to reduce and monitor the carbon and water footprint, reduce the amount of generated waste, increase recycling efforts, reduce electricity consumption, reuse shower and rainwater for the irrigation of tennis courts and gardens, promote sustainable transportation and support local products and businesses.

He went on to describe in detail the actions carried out in recent years and the results obtained.

His presentation was followed by a question and answer time, in which the participants were very active and showed their interest in the subject.

It won’t be easy, it won’t be cheap, but it will be a great challenge for the future enjoyment of our planet.

The perpetual calendar, a mind of gears, automatically accounts for the vagaries of months, including leap years, and may not need adjustment until the year 2100. The minute repeater, the most poetic of complications, transforms time into sound, chiming the hours, quarters, and minutes on tiny gongs at the push of a slide—a melody of pure mechanics.

The tourbillon, invented to counteract gravity’s effect on accuracy, is a mesmerizing rotating cage for the escapement, a whirlwind of technical prowess that symbolizes the watchmaker’s quest for perfection. Each complication is a chapter in a longer story of human curiosity and triumph over micro-engineering challenges.
